Des Moines Iowa Car Accidents Increase with Winter Weather Thursday Night

Last night brought winter weather to central Iowa and many were unprepared for the driving conditions that quickly developed.  Over 70 car accidents were reported in the Des Moines area on Thursday night after the snow started.  People are often injured in car wrecks during snowy conditions.  Drivers must take additional care to keep themselves and other vehicles on the road safe.  A few tips given by AAA with regard to driving in snow are:

  • Accelerate and decelerate slowly. Applying the gas slowly to accelerate is the best method for regaining traction and avoiding skids. Remember: It takes longer to slow down on icy roads.
  • Drive slowly. Everything takes longer on snow-covered roads. Accelerating, stopping, turning - nothing happens as quickly as on dry pavement. Give yourself time to maneuver by driving slowly.
  • The normal dry pavement following distance of three to four seconds should be increased to eight to ten seconds. This increased margin of safety will provide the longer distance needed if you have to stop.
  • Stay home. If you really don't have to go out, don't. Even if you can drive well in the snow, not everyone else can. Don't tempt fate: If you don't have somewhere you have to be, watch the snow from indoors.

With winter arriving in Iowa, the amount of driving on snow will only be increasing.  Make sure to follow the tips above and keep yourself and your family safe.  You can learn more about Iowa car accidents and the 7 Secrets to Not Wreck Your Case by requesting a copy of our FREE book, The Legal Insider’s Guide to Iowa Car Accidents.  You can never have too much information so enjoy this book at your convenience and be knowledgeable about your rights.  If you need information immediately contact us now at 641-792-3595 or 515-440-2852.
