GHSA Contributes to Combat Distracted Driving in Iowa

Considering distracted driving is a leading factor in car accidents, the Governors Highway Safety Administration (GHSA) recommends Iowans to avoid using any electronic devices while driving, regardless of the current Iowa cell phone laws. For questions on how cell phone laws affect you after a car accident in Ames, contact an Ames personal injury lawyer.

GHSA Recommendations to Combat Distracted Driving

The GHSA has a recommendation for each public sphere.

For the federal government, the GHSA prescribes 4 major actions:

  • fund research for safety methodologies and public safety media campaigns;
  • provide financial incentives for states with more stringent cell phone laws;
  • develop new policies that encourage companies to reduce employee business-related cell phone use while driving; and
  • actively support new technologies that might minimize distracted driving.

For individual states the GHSA recommends 2 things. First, they would like each state to consider banning text messaging for all drivers (something Iowa recently enacted). Second, they would like to ban cell phone use for new drivers.

Finally, for the private sector, the GHSA recommends 2 innovative solutions. First, companies should consider banning cell phone use and texting when their employees are driving for business purposes. Second, companies should also try to develop new technologies that may reduce cell phone-related driving distractions.

If someone has violated Iowa cell phone laws and their negligence caused your car accident in Ames, you'll want to speak to an Ames personal injury lawyer who can begin investigating your case and help you make a claim.
