The weather in Iowa is supposed to get very slick late tonight and tomorrow. This means traveling will be tricky if not dangerous. Remember during icy or snowy conditions the most important thing you can do is slow down. Rushing or trying to hurry can significantly increase your risk of getting into a car accident. Iowans have been driving during winter conditions for a little while now and people might be getting comfortable and used to it. However, pure ice on roads is much different than a wintry mix. Some tips for helping you make it to your destination safely are:
• If you need to be somewhere by a certain time you should leave 15 minutes earlier than you normally would
• When following a car you should try to keep at least 15 car lengths between you and the car in front of you
• Remember to steer in the direction you want to go if your tires lose traction
• Keep your eyes on the road and look ahead to spot anything that might be a problem
• Keep your car completely cleaned off
• Keep your gas tank full and your tires inflated
Please remember that driving on icy roads requires your full attention and for you to be aware. This means you shouldn’t be talking on your cell phone and you most certainly should not attempt to text anyone. Do Not use your cruise control or rely on all-wheel drive or stability control, these features won’t make driving on ice any easier. Places such as bridges, ramps, intersections, and overpasses tend to be the most common trouble spots for slick conditions. Please remember to ask everyone to wear their seat belt and don’t try to go beyond your car’s limits. Walker, Billingsley & Bair promotes safe driving and hopes everyone takes extra caution as they drive this week.
