The Des Moines Register recently reported that the number of fatalities caused by car and motorcycle accidents is significantly down so far this year. This year might possibly hold the lowest number of deaths caused by cars or motorcycles since World War II ended. Iowa State Patrol troopers have started to patrol high-crash areas more. Polk County has the most fatal accidents each year, because it is a high populated area. Hopefully the number of accidents will stay down over the holidays as well. Things such as issuing more seat belt and drunken driving tickets as well as safer cars are among the reasons for the decrease.
Now if everyone could start to pay more attention to the road this number might go down even more. On my way to work yesterday morning there was a lady in a minivan behind me holding a coffee in one hand and talking on her cell phone with the other while driving 65 mph down the interstate. I was starting to wonder how she was even steering. Then today after dropping my kid off at school I was driving through a residential area and passed a young woman who was applying makeup in her visor mirror while driving! (I was happy to be going in the opposite direction) People should know that the car or commute to work isn’t the time or place to get ready for the day or do other tasks.
I am happy to see that troopers are starting to patrol certain areas more and catch these offenders. Educating people on how dangerous distractions are while driving also helps them realize that simple little things can help prevent accidents and even deaths. The news article also stated that Iowa’s mandatory seat belt law is obeyed by 93% of people!
