Stems Cells May Help Repair Spinal Cord Nerve Damage

According to a report published in March by the website Sciencedaily.com, human cells derived from stem cells have helped to repair damage to the nervous systems of rats. After being transplanted into the spinal cords of injured rodents, the stem cells not only helped to repair nerve damage, but also helped the rats regain some of their motor functions.

The study, which was first published in the journal PLoS ONE, and conducted in conjunction by research teams at the University of Colorado and the University of Rochester, concentrates on human astrocytes, which are the major support cells in the central nervous system. The research teams hope to have made a significant breakthrough in the use of astrocytes for repairing spinal cord injuries in humans.

As of now, spinal cord injuries, which are significant forms of nerve damage, are usually unable to be repaired. Instead, medical professionals focus on treatments for spinal cord injuries, such as medicine, therapy, rehabilitation, and in extreme cases, invasive surgery.

According to the director of the University of Rochester Stem Cell and Regenerative Medicine Institute, this discovery is a leap forward in the development of spinal cord injury therapies.

If you have suffered from a spinal cord injury or another type of nerve damage after a car accident in Iowa, you may be compensated for your medical treatment in a personal injury claim. A Des Moines personal injury lawyer may help maximize your financial recovery.
