When to See a Doctor if You Suspect a Herniated Disc

If you think you may have suffered a herniated disc in a Newton work accident, you should immediately report your work injuries to your employer and ask for a referral to the physician that handles their Workers' Compensation cases.

To be safe, it's best to see a doctor after any work injury, regardless of how you are feeling. When you experience the following symptoms, prompt medical attention is crucial:

  • the pain in your leg includes persistent tingling, numbness or weakness anywhere from your buttock to your foot;
  • you have new pain in your lower back and you are vomiting or have a temperature of 101 degrees or higher that has lasted more than 2 days;
  • your leg pain or weakness, tingling or numbness has persisted for more than a week, despite home treatment;
  • your back pain is persistent or it has intensified;
  • you are certain that you injured your back in a Newton work accident and the symptoms have not improved in 3 days;
  • along with back pain, you have pain when you are urinating or there is blood in your urine;
  • your back is worse when resting than it is when you are active; and
  • you notice bladder and bowel problems.

Your doctor will perform a physical exam and they may order an MRI or CT scan. Treatment will depend on the severity of your herniated disc and could include medication, physical therapy and/or surgery.

For help filing a Workers' Compensation claim after your Newton work accident, you should consult with a Newton Workers' Compensation attorney. While you focus on recovery, your attorney can work with your employer's insurer in efforts to secure fair compensation for you.
