Should I hire a lawyer and if yes, when should I hire the lawyer?

A: You should know that you may not need to hire a lawyer in your case.  For example, if your injuries are relatively minor (no broken bones or surgery) and you have made a full recovery then you may want to try and handle your case without a lawyer and try to settle your case with the insurance company on your own.  On the other hand, if you have sustained serious injuries then you should consider talking to and perhaps hiring an attorney in your case before you make a mistake that could cost you thousands of dollars.  An example of an area which causes great confusion is what is known as subrogation.  Subrogation is when your car insurance and/or health insurance companies make a claim against the money you receive in an Iowa car accident.  Failing to properly deal with subrogation claims may result in part or all or part of your settlement being paid to the insurance company instead of being paid to you.  Iowa has special subrogation laws, but unless you know how the law, how they work and the best way to work with subrogation companies like Healthcare Recoveries, Wellmark Blue Cross/Blue Shield, Ingenix, etc. then you may end up giving away thousands of dollars in your case.
