Leveling the Field between Injured Iowans and Insurance Companies.

Do you like to ride your bike in the summer time? There has been a lot of trouble between drivers and bike riders this summer.

There has always been a lot of controversy about bicycle riders obeying the traffic laws and drivers watching for bicycle riders on the road. It seems to be a two sided argument, some people believe that bicycle riders take advantage of riding on roads and don’t follow traffic laws like they should. Some argue that the cause of accidents is people in cars who don’t watch out for cyclist, don’t give them any room or show any regard for bicyclist who are out in the streets.

There has been a lot of effort made in Iowa to make it safe for bicyclists to ride around town. Many central Iowa towns are trying to come up with a plan to ensure the safety of bike riders. Des Moines alone has created a map showing which streets and areas in Des Moines don’t have a lot of traffic, making it safer for cyclist to ride on those streets or in those areas. There recently was a bicycle summit in Des Moines to promote and try to make safe riding for bikes.

Iowa City has recently put efforts towards making the streets safe for cyclist in their city. They have placed shared-lane arrows in the streets to let drivers and cyclists know that they need to share the lane with each other. A major problem in creating bicycle safety is it seems as though drivers and cyclists don’t like to share the road with each other. If they could learn to respect each other I think these programs would have more success.
