The number of bicycle accidents has increased this summer along with the media attention they have been getting. It seems like Iowa may no longer be a safe place to ride your bike. Drivers and cyclist are still having a hard time sharing the road with one another. Right now there is currently a petition formed by the Citizens for Safety Coalition of Iowa to ban the use of bicycles on “farm-to-market” roads. Basically this is a petition banning bikes from 30,500 miles of gravel and paved roads in Iowa. The reason for the petition is a number of accidents that occur on county and rural roads could be easily prevented by cycling in designated area rather than on these roads.
There is a lot of controversy over whether or not bicycles should be banned on these roads in Iowa. Bicyclists are considered to be traffic and should follow traffic laws and regulations just as cars do. The state of Iowa has tried to make it safer for bike riders in the state. However, people haven’t given enough dedication or effort for this to work. If the ban does get passed it will mean that people in rural areas won’t be allowed to ride their bike to get to town or even around where they live for exercise or enjoyment.
Cycling is a large part of Iowa as it hosts RAGBRAI every year and does have many trails for riders to enjoy. If people could work together to make Iowa safe for bike riders the outcome could benefit a lot of the state.
