Leveling the Field between Injured Iowans and Insurance Companies.

Repetitive movements at your job can lead to a work injury

Carpal tunnel is a very common work injury. Many people are at risk for this condition due to repetitive use of their hands and wrists. An example is if you work at an occupation that requires you to use power tools daily such as a jackhammer or chainsaw. Other risk factors include any kind of job that requires repetitive, forceful, awkward, or stress motions of your hands and/or wrists. Carpal tunnel typically occurs on the palm side of your wrist. The carpal tunnel is a passageway that protects the main nerve to your hand as well as tendons that help you bend your fingers. If there is any pressure placed on this nerve it can cause numbness and pain.

Symptoms include numbness, tingling, and pain in the hand. The thumb side of the hand is usually where the pain takes place the most. You may get sensations that travel up your arm towards your shoulder. In the beginning symptoms may come and go, but over time they can become regular. You may even experience weakness in your hand; making simple tasks such as pushing a button seem difficult.

There are nonsurgical options for treatment if you are diagnosed with carpal tunnel by your doctor. Generally your doctor will have you wear a splint or a brace to keep your wrist in a natural position. You can take medicine to help reduce the level of pain you might be experiencing. Another option is to switch the way you are using your hand and the position you put it in. If you avoid all activities that aggravate your wrist it will help reduce symptoms. To provide temporary relief your doctor might suggest a cortisone injection. However, this is only temporary relief and won’t cure or heal your carpal tunnel completely. You also have the option to have surgery performed.
