When you are in a car accident there are many possible injuries you might end up with, whiplash is one of the most common injuries people suffer after a car accident. Whiplash is caused when your head experiences sudden movement backward, forward, or sideways causing injury to your neck. When this happens the head goes beyond normal limits which means, the muscles and ligaments that support the spine are possibly over-stretched or torn.
Symptoms of whiplash may not appear right away; in fact it might take several days for you to feel any pain or problems with your neck. Whiplash can also cause injury to ligaments, cervical muscles, nerve roots, and intervertebral joints. Whiplash might require several treatments before it is healed, sometimes you can still have pain or symptoms years later after the injury occurred.
Common symptoms of having whiplash may include:
• Neck stiffness
• Dizziness
• Shoulder pain
• Fatigue
• Blurred vision
• Headaches
• Irritability
• Disturbances in sleep pattern
If you go to your doctor after experiencing any of these symptoms, he or she may not be able to see that you have whiplash by taking your x-ray. MRIs or CT Scans are generally used to detect any injury to disks, muscles or ligaments. This will help the doctor diagnose you correctly so you receive proper treatment.
There isn’t one particular treatment option that will heal whiplash, but there are a number of things you can try and find one that might work better for you than the others. Certain treatment options you can try are pain medications such as Motrin, gentle exercises, physical therapy, massage treatments, heat, ice, or even injections. Finding the right treatment plan for your injury can depend on the pain you are having and where it is located. Your doctor will be able to help you once you have been diagnosed.
