Leveling the Field between Injured Iowans and Insurance Companies.

Business Owners Concerned about Proposed Bike Lanes

Recent decisions about revamping streets in Des Moines to make them “bicycle friendly” have raised many concerns. The change is to take place on Ingersoll Avenue, the complete streets will reduce the lanes from four to three meaning there will be one lane in each directions and then a center lane for left-hand turns. Business owners on Ingersoll are worried that this might reduce traffic which will then cause a drop in revenue, because people won’t stop at their businesses anymore. While this may be true, a study done by Iowa State University in 2006 showed that three lane streets reduced crashes down by 29 percent.

There are current streets in Des Moines that do have bicycle lanes if you are curious what the look like. For example one current bicycle lane runs on East Walnut Street from the river to East Ninth Street. The safety of travelers should be the main concern. It doesn’t matter the mode of transportation you are using, you need to be cautious and do everything you can to prevent an accident. There have been many accidents this summer in Central Iowa, its time towns and cities make an effort to make it safer for their communities to travel by any means of transportation.
