Leveling the Field between Injured Iowans and Insurance Companies.

Do you know how to prevent accident-causing mistakes when driving?

This is the last part in our 3 part article on lethal driving mistakes made by people everywhere. The mistakes discussed in this article are just as important as the previous ones discussed, because even though they aren’t the most dangerous mistakes, they are still causing accidents that could be prevented.

5. Inattentive Driving. There has been a lot of hype and media coverage over distracted driving recently due to cell phones, iPods, and other gadgets causing accidents, because it is becoming an increased problem among drivers everywhere and it can easily be prevented. Even hands free devices don’t help the problem, research shows that a hands free phone is just as dangerous and distracts drivers the same as a hand held device. Just recently Iowa has proposed a texting ban that could go into effect shortly. Hopefully this will be one less distraction to drivers on Iowa’s roads.

Other things such as eating, reading, trying to do too much with the CD player or radio should be avoided as well. Instead of having to fiddle with the radio or CD player while driving down the road, we suggest that you put in a CD with all songs you like so you don’t have to change it or maybe even make a playlist on your iPod for the trip. If you need to do something that may distract your driving you should pull over at a rest stop or do it at a red light instead of while you are moving.

6. Most states have laws against not wearing a seat belt, which is the next danger you should try to avoid. Even if your state doesn’t require you to wear a seat belt you should consider buckling up for your our safety. 33% of people who die in car accidents don’t buckle up. This increases a driver or passenger’s risk of being thrown from the car which tend to end in death as well.

7. Running a red light may not seem like that big of a deal to some people, but running a light after it has been red for a couple seconds is asking for a car accident. Most likely you won’t get through the intersection you are trying to cross without causing traffic problems. Running a red light can cause a side-impact or head on collision.

8. Have you ever driven too fast just for the fun of it or messed around behind the wheel trying to show off? Erratic or reckless driving is another common mistake that many people tend to make. This is very avoidable; you should simply not do it. There is no logical reason to tailgate, weave in and out of traffic, or drive fast. In 2007, 1,850 people were killed in accidents due to reckless driving. It is possible that all of those deaths could have been prevented if drivers would obey the laws and use caution instead of driving irresponsibly.

Now that you have read through some of the most lethal driving mistakes made by drivers, we hope that you take time to think about the way you drive everyday and make any changes necessary to make yourself a better driver. This will not only protect you and your family, but also the lives of other drivers out on the road.
