Leveling the Field between Injured Iowans and Insurance Companies.

More Travelers on the Road Increases your Risk of an Accident

Many Iowans will be traveling here and there this week to visit their family for Thanksgiving. According to AAA holiday travel is expected to increase by 1.4% from last year. The holidays were a tough time last year due to the economic situation most people were in and travel was down around the holidays by 25.2%. However, now in 2009 people seem to be doing a little better. AAA also predicts that most people will be driving to reach their destination, an estimated 33.2 million people in fact, which is a 2.1% increase from 2008. This means there will be more traffic on the roads this week.

While making your travel plans you may want to consider the time and what day you plan to leave. If you leave Tuesday or Wednesday you might not run into much traffic, but leaving Wednesday night or Thursday morning could mean heavier traffic and higher risk of getting into an accident. Not everyone has the choice of when they can travel, but if you do this is something to consider. Also, driving during the day or before 9 p.m. is recommended, this way you aren’t tired and your chances of getting into a crash are less.

With all the traffic on the road, be sure of your destination if you are traveling somewhere new, this way you know exactly where you are going and aren’t trying to navigate in heavy traffic. You should also be sure to pay extra close attention to your surroundings and not follow too closely; interstates and highways will be busy. So far this year in Iowa the number of car accident fatalities is at a record low. Driving safely can help to keep this number down. The weather forecast for central Iowa does include a chance for rain or snow on Wednesday and Thursday so be sure to take extra caution while driving. Also, be sure to watch out for the many Black Friday shoppers all day on Friday after Thanksgiving!
