Leveling the Field between Injured Iowans and Insurance Companies.

The noise level at your job could permanently disable you

Working certain jobs may require you to be around loud noises from time to time or even in a constant loud environment. You may not think too much about being around loud noise at work, but it can result in an injury. Hearing loss is a person’s decreased ability to hear and perceive information. Most hearing losses can’t be reversed and are permanent disabilities. Hearing loss usually results from damage to the inner ear and is considered a scheduled member injury under Iowa workers' comp. laws. In addition to hearing loss, some people experience ringing in their ears which is called tinnitus. Tinnitus can not only be annoying, but can affect your ability to work and is considered a body as a whole condition under Iowa's workers' compensation laws.

If you work in constant noise it can cause wear and tear on hairs or nerve cells in a part of your ear called the cochlea which sends sounds signals to your brain. When these are damaged or missing the signals are not send out efficiently and this is when hearing loss occurs. You should be able to detect a hearing loss quiet easily. Symptoms include difficulty understanding words, muffled quality of speech, avoidance of some social settings, having to turn up the volume on the radio or TV, and withdrawal from conversations.

If you suspect you have a hearing loss you should notify your employer and go see a doctor right away so he or she can determine how severe it is. You will need to have a general screening done by your doctor and possibly a more-thorough test by an audiologist. There are certain things you can have done to help your hearing loss. Having your ear wax removed may clear your ear out so you can hear well. Hearing aids are for a hearing loss due to inner ear damage. Hearing aids help to make sounds stronger and easier for you to hear. There are many different hearing devices out there; you will have to find the one that works best for you personally. You could also opt for a Cochlear implant which is a like a hearing aid in that it amplifies sound, but it is implanted in your ear.

Dealing with a hearing loss can be difficult and take time getting used to. You may have to change the way you communicate to help you hear well. For example, make sure all background noise is shut off while you are talking to someone, you can ask people to speak clearly when they talk to you, and you can also choose a quiet setting to have a conversation versus a loud restaurant or social event.

If you are an Iowa worker that deals with noise on a daily basis you need to consider protecting your ears but wearing earmuffs or ear plugs that bring loud noises down. You should also have your hearing tested on a regular basis so a hearing loss can be detected early.
