Many Iowans hurt at work have back injuries. They can range from a strain to a herniated disk. Many injured workers are told they have a bulging disk and do not understand what that is. It is closely related to a herniated disk, but is different. A bulging disk occurs when the ligaments connecting the vertebrae in your spine get stretched and allow the disk to stick out into the spinal canal.
Bulging disks can cause nerve damage, but they do not tend to cause pain and some injured workers may not realize they have the problem. Thankfully, bulging disks are much more common than herniated or ruptured disks. Although, they are less common and tend to be less painful, depending on the severity of the problem, treatment may be the same for a bulging disk as it is for a herniated disk.
Most injuries will initially be treated with less invasive therapies such as rest, pain medication, heat or cold therapy and physical therapy. More severe cases may require surgery if the other methods are unsuccessful in alleviating the problem. Some bulging disks are the result of a traumatic work injury and some happen over time due to repetitive work. The subsequent nerve damage causes pain, numbness, weakness or limited mobility which leads the worker to seek medical attention. Be sure to keep a diary of your injuries so that you can inform the doctor of what has happened.
