Collarbone Injuries are very common in hazardous work conditions

Collarbone fractures are very common, they account for 5-10% of all fractures which occur. There are numerous ways a person can break or injure their collarbone on the job. If you fall onto your arm while it is stretched out or onto the point of your shoulder then it may fracture. Common jobs where a collarbone fracture might occur would be a construction or factory job where there are many fall hazards. The collarbone can easily be seen, because it is very near the skin. It is designed to support the shoulder and helps to align the shoulder with the rest of the chest. If you fracture your collarbone more than likely you will know right away. There are obvious signs such as:
• Severe pain
• Swelling
• Sound of the bone cracking
• Bruising
• Seeing the bone disfigurement

If you have fractured your collarbone then you will want to seek medical attention right away. Once you see a doctor they will take x-rays to see the full extent of the fracture, they will then be able to determine what the best treatment is for you. Most fractures are able to heal on their own and won’t need surgery. More than 85% of collarbone fractures occur in the middle of the bone meaning it will most likely heal on its own with the help of a brace.

You may need surgery if you have suffered an open fracture, meaning the ends of the bone have come through your skin. However, if the bone does not penetrate the skin, your doctor will generally recommend that you wear a sling or figure eight brace for a couple weeks and ice the area of the break. Which brace you wear is up to you, however, most people find that a sling is more comfortable than a figure eight. The time it takes to heal will vary from person to person, in some adults it can take up to four months for a collarbone fracture to heal.
