The meniscus refers to the cartilage between the thighbone and shinbone that serve the purpose of cushioning the joint. A meniscus tear may occur when the knee is twisted in an awkward position and force is applied, which may be the case in a car accident.
Tears in the meniscus are not all the same. They can happen in different locations and in different ways. The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons reports that the most common meniscus tears are known as a parrot-beak, bucket handle, flap, longitudinal, and mixed or complex tears. These names refer to the place in the meniscus where the tear occurs and the style of the tear.
Symptoms of a Meniscus Tear
Like most injuries, the first symptom of a meniscus tear is pain. Usually, this pain is very intense and debilitating. Other symptoms are below.
- A feeling that the knee cannot support the body and will give way underweight
- Inability to move the knee
- Swelling and stiffness
- Trouble fully extending the knee
Usually, a popping sensation also accompanies a meniscus tear.
Treatment for a Torn Meniscus
Most patients who suffer from a torn meniscus will need to wear a knee brace to provide support to the injured area. Ice, corticosteroid injections and anti-inflammatory drugs also may be used. If the tear is severe, knee arthroscopy, a type of surgery, may be required. According to MedlinePlus, a person’s age may have an effect on the type of treatment pursued. Younger patients may be less likely to require surgery.
