Cars and motorcycles sharing the road has been an ongoing problem for many years and it continues to be a problem as the number of motorcycle riders increases. There are car and motorcycle accidents each year, two-thirds of these accidents are caused by error of the vehicle operator. It is important that any driver regardless of their transportation mode makes an effort to drive safe. There are things both motorist and motorcycle riders can do to ensure their own safety and reduce the risk of getting into an accident with one another.
Motorcycle Riders
Make yourself visible: Wear gear that makes you more visible in traffic, but will also protect you in the event of a crash. You should also have reflective strips or decals on your bike for when you ride at night.
Signal your intentions: Be sure to use your signals when you change lanes and it is a good idea to flash your brake light when you are slowing down before stopping so the drivers behind you aren’t forced to slam on their breaks.
Ride so you are seen: Motorcycles can easily be in a motorist’s blind spot and can also be easily hidden in traffic. You should find a spot in a lane that helps you to be seen well.
Sharpen your riding skills: Know what you are able to handle when riding, don’t drive faster than your limits if you know you can’t handle it. You can also take a refresher course to help review and upgrade your skills. Many community colleges offer motorcycle courses.
Be courteous and respectful: You can reduce your risk of crashing if you don’t drive aggressive and respect other drivers on the road.
Motorists
Look for Motorcycles: Be sure to be on the lookout for motorcycles, pay extra attention at intersections and when making left turns.
Allow plenty of space: Leave extra space between you and the motorcycle, if wind, heavy traffic, or abnormal road conditions were to occur a motorcycle needs plenty of room, because they react differently to these types of situations than cars or trucks do.
Respect the motorcyclist: Drivers need to know that motorcycles are vehicles too and have a right to be on the road just as much as cars or trucks do
Signal your intentions: Before changing lanes be sure to check your blind spots and be sure to use your blinker when you do change lanes. You should check your blind spots frequently so you are aware of the vehicles or motorcycles around you.
The key to help preventing accidents is having respect for other drivers on the road and to be a respectful driver. If you are aggressive or treat other drivers like they are in your way you have a greater risk of getting into an accident or even causing an accident. Just because motorcycles are a different type of a motorized vehicle doesn’t mean they don’t have a right to be on the road. Be a good courteous driver and you should have no problems.
