While Iowa doesn’t require you to wear a motorcycle helmet, the helmet you choose can save your life. As such, choosing one that fits you well and is as safe as possible is very important. To help you pick the right helmet, here are three tips on how to buy a motorcycle helmet.

Choose a DOT-approved Helmet

The most important part of motorcycle helmet safety is choosing one that will adequately protect your head in the event of an accident. While some helmets may look cool, unless they have the DOT (U.S. Department of Transportation) sticker on them, they may not be safe. The DOT sticker signifies that the helmet meets FMVSS (Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards) number 218, which are strict standards for motorcycle helmet manufacturing. The sticker can usually be found on the backside of the helmet.

Find a Motorcycle Helmet That Fits

Another important part of buying a safe motorcycle helmet is making sure that the helmet you choose fits you well. www.HelmetCheck.org states that in order to make sure your helmet is fitted properly, you should assess the following aspects:

  1. The cheek pads comfortably touch your cheeks.
  2. There is no gap between the cushioning, your brow, and your temples.
  3. The helmet doesn’t push away from the back of your neck.
  4. If purchasing a full-face helmet, the shield should not touch your nose or chin.

The helmet should also not move or wobble on your head. If it does, choose one with a more appropriate fit.

Consider Personal Preference When Choosing a Motorcycle Helmet

The third thing to consider when purchasing a safe motorcycle helmet is your personal preference – Do you need a helmet that will keep you warmer while riding? Do you want a face shield?  Helmets come with a variety of different features to fit your taste. Choosing a helmet that fits well and is DOT-approved is a good start.
