Learn More about the Dangers of Teen Driving

One of the scariest things as a parent is to allow their teenager to start driving. This is a very valid fear, as driving is one of the greatest dangers your teenager will face. Car accidents are the leading cause of death among teenagers, with 15 and 16 year olds having the highest crash rating among any other age group. While driving is the biggest danger your teenager will face, there are ways to make sure that your teenager stays safe and avoids car wrecks and injuries in Iowa.
Being aware of the main factors that cause most teenager collisions will help parents stay informed as well as help them teach their teenagers exactly how to drive safe. Simply teaching your teenager the basics of driving and helping them get their driver’s license isn’t enough. Parents need to make teenagers aware of the exact dangers of driving and exactly how to handle them in order to keep them the safest and avoid car accidents.
The biggest factors involved in teenager car accidents in Iowa include:
  • Other Teen Passengers – A majority of car accidents in Iowa happen when there are other teens in the car. When a teenager first learns how to drive, especially in the first six months, there shouldn’t be any other teens in the car with them as it can be too distracting. Having other passengers only serves to increase the risk for a car accident by a large percentage.
  • Night Driving – It’s been noted that more than half of the car accidents that involve teenagers happen between the hours of 9PM and 6AM on the weekends. Limit nighttime driving, especially for new teenage drivers.
  • Speeding – Excessive speeds are one of the main reasons for teenager car accidents, along with reckless driving and driving under the influence. Talking to your teenager about the importance of driving safe, following the speed limit and of course avoiding drugs or alcohol will help to keep them safe on the road.
  • Not Wearing Seat Belts – Out of all drivers, teenagers have the lowest rate of seatbelt use, which puts them at higher risk for injuries or even death from car accidents. It’s parents’ responsibility to stress the importance of wearing a seatbelt while driving.
As parents, we can do our best to inform teenagers of the above risks of driving and how to minimize those risks. Putting obvious limits on your teenager’s driving will help them to avoid car accidents and keep them safe.
