Following pedestrian laws is a great start to preventing accidents – but additional steps may even further reduce risk.

Preventing a pedestrian accident:

  • always walk on the crosswalk: according to the pedestrian laws of Iowa, pedestrians always have the right of way when they cross at a marked or unmarked crosswalk at an intersection when there are no traffic control signals.
  • look both ways before crossing: although there are laws in Iowa regarding the right-of-way for pedestrians, an individual must always exercise extreme caution even when using crosswalks or crossing roads at designated crossing points. Always stop before entering a roadway and look both ways to ensure it is safe to do so.
  • wear bright colors at night: wearing light and bright colors at night could make a pedestrian more visible to motorists even from a distance.

Unfortunately, following all the rules and regulations of the road and the tips above does not guarantee safety for a pedestrian. Pedestrians hit by vehicles through no fault of their own can claim compensation for damages.

Damages pedestrians can request include:

  • medical bills;
  • lost wages during recovery; and
  • even pain and suffering related to the accident and resulting injuries.
