How is your weekly workers' compensation rate calculated?

It is often a mystery to workers injured in Iowa about how their weekly check (known as "rate") is calculated.  There is also a lot of confusion as many employers and insurance companies tell injured workers that the rate is 80% of their wages.  Actually, the workers' compensation rate is based upon what is known as the injured workers average weekly wage, number of exemptions and marital status.  Once the average weekly wage is determined then there is a formula which is based upon 80% of the workers spendable earnings before the work injury.  To learn more about how the workers' compensation rate is calculated including a link to the chart which will show what your rate should be based upon your average weekly wage go to our question and answer about this topic.
