Leveling the Field between Injured Iowans and Insurance Companies.

How quickly can you react in an accident?

In Iowa there is a lot of traffic on the roads each day, which means that there are going to be accidents. Your brain reaction time is the amount of time it takes you to react to a situation while driving. An example would be, seeing something in the middle of the road and trying to avoid hitting it. Reaction time is important because it can make the difference between a deadly accident and a safe trip to your destination.

There are many things that can affect a person's reaction time:

  • A person's age can affect reaction time; younger people tend to react faster.
  • Gender is another factor; women take slightly longer to react than men.
  • Mental load, if someone is driving and has a lot on their mind it may take them longer to react to a situation than someone who is focused only on driving.
  • Visibility & impairment are two big ones; if weather conditions are bad or someone is under the influence then their reaction time may be a lot slower.
There isn't an average brain reaction time while driving, because everyone is different. However, under the best driving conditions it is believed that 0.7 seconds is the best possible reaction time.

People can practice safe driving, but it will still be complicated. Drivers must not only be aware of their surroundings and the cars in front of them, but also the cars behind them and to the side of them not to mention paying attention to the speed limits and trying to get where they are going. This is why it is very important to stay focused. Things such as passengers, iPods, cell phones, and the radio can easily distract you, if you look away from the road for just a second it may cause an accident.
