Although dangerous, riding a motorcycle is a popular hobby for many Iowans. There are many things you can do to prevent an accident or reduce your chances of being in one. There are many factors that can cause a motorcycle crash and injuries. If you do chose to ride a motorcycle you should think safety first.
Did you know that 92% of motorcycle riders involved in accidents basically have no training?
Training is the number one way to avoid an accident. Just because you know how to ride a motorcycle doesn’t mean you are familiar with all the rules and laws that should be followed to prevent accidents.
You can take a simple course at a local community college to brush up on your skills. Training is the #1 thing that you can do to reduce your chances of both being in an accident and the severity of your injuries if you are in one.
It is a poor idea to drink and then ride a motorcycle
Almost one-half of the all deadly motorcycle crashes involve alcohol use by the motorcycle rider. Alcohol is a depressant and reduces your reaction time. While this affects you if you are driving a car, the balance and other physical requirements of riding a motorcycle are affected even further by alcohol. If someone pulls-out in front of you and you have been drinking, then your reaction time may be diminished enough that you are not able to avoid the accident.
Proper maintenance is another measure you can take to prevent an accident
Statistically, only 3% of motorcycle accidents are caused by vehicle failures with most of them being single vehicle accidents where the rider lost control because of a flat tire. As we know, losing control at high speed is dangerous and often results in injuries to the rider.
The lesson that needs to be learned is if you keep up on the maintenance of your motorcycle you are reducing the risk of being in an accident or causing one as well. A 30 second inspection of your tires and wheels before hitting the road can save your life or the life of another.
