It has been more than 15 years since we launched our distracted driver safety program and we hope that you and your family have taken the steps to prevent an avoidable tragedy.
QuitDD.com (DD- short for Distracted Driving) is a community safety project to help deal with these sobering statistics:
According to the FCC (Federal Communications Commission) the most recent data shows that cellphone use is cited in 14% of all distraction-related fatal crashes. The research done by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, in 2019 showed that distracted or inattentive driving became a national epidemic. In 2024, there were 3,208 people killed and an estimated additional 315,167 people injured in motor vehicle traffic crashes involving distracted drivers. The age group of 25-34 accounts for the highest percentage of cellphone use at 27% of the fatal crashes caused by cellphone distraction.
- In 2024 the number of deaths caused by motor vehicle crashes in the United States reached 36,297. Along with over 189,000 deaths in the last 5 years
- Year after year, motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for U.S. teens, followed by other injury-related matters and tragically, teenage suicide is the 3rd leading cause of death.
- On average, 11 teenagers die every day because of texting and driving.
Remember, it is not only a good idea to avoid cellphone use while driving, but it is now Iowa law. Iowa Code Section 321.276, which provides that:
"A person shall not use an electronic device while driving a motor vehicle unless the motor vehicle is at a complete stop off the traveled portion of the roadway, or as far away from the center of the roadway as is practicable if the vehicle cannot be entirely removed from the traveled portion of the roadway."
Iowa police officers are now pulling people over, and a violation can cost you from $100 up to $1,000 plus court costs and surcharges. How can you help remind your family and friends not to use their cellphones while driving?

Who Are We?
We are a group of local concerned citizens who have seen firsthand tragedies caused by texting and distracted driving. Currently, members of our group are Corey and Beth Walker (local attorneys), Jeff Maki (a Newton area insurance agent) and Dr. Jay Koenen (a Newton Chiropractor). We want to make a difference in the lives of local residents because if we prevent even one tragedy the money spent will be well worth it.
This community project was the idea of Iowa personal injury attorney Corey Walker who has represented hundreds of Iowans injured and killed in car accidents. He has seen an alarming trend of car crashes caused by distracted driving such as texting while driving and talking on cells phones while driving. He decided to do something about this problem and formed a group of concerned citizens to develop and finance this community safety project. Yes, personal injury lawyers care about their community and can and do help people.
