A husband and wife from Des Moines were driving on a local highway when an approaching motorist lost control of his vehicle striking them nearly head-on at highway speed. The force of the impact crushed the vehicles and broke several bones in our clients' bodies. The husband was driving the car and he sustained the most injuries which required him to spend several weeks in the hospital having surgeries followed by months in a rehabilitation center. Thankfully, they both escaped with their lives and were able to return to a mostly normal life. Later on, we found out that the other driver only had $100,000 in insurance coverage to cover their injuries. The medical bills alone were hundreds of thousands of dollars. Thankfully, our clients were very smart and purchase their own UIM (underinsured motorist) umbrella policy of $1,000,000 in addition to their regular automobile insurance policy. They received a total of $1,400,000 because they purchased UIM insurance. Had they not purchased the UIM umbrella policy the most they would have received is the $100,000 from the other driver's insurance and $250,000 from their own auto insurance policy.
