Whether you are a motorcyclist out for a ride or a driver sharing the road with bikers, the best way to avoid a collision is the same: always be watching. Nearly all accidents involving motorcycles and another vehicle happen because of one key factor – one or more of the drivers simply did not see the other person.

Here are just a few ways that you can ensure that you are aware of your surroundings on the road:

- Put down the cell phone. Studies have shown that distracted driving is just as dangerous as driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Quit texting, talking, and browsing the web while behind the wheel, even at stop lights or while stuck in traffic.

- Look twice at intersections. Just because you don’t see someone approaching at first glance does it mean that you should continue through an intersection without taking a second look. Taking an extra moment before proceeding could prevent you from accidentally taking a life.

- Know what to look and listen for. Heightened awareness of motorcycles during the warmer months can be achieved by training yourself to notice things like smaller moving objects in your rearview and side mirrors and the rumble of an approaching motorcycle engine.

- Assume that there is always a motorcycle nearby. If you anticipate having to look out for motorcycles, you will be more likely to adapt your driving so that you are safely sharing the road, instead of having to make a split-second maneuver to avoid colliding with a biker.

- Don’t rely on mirrors alone when switching lanes. Blind spots are especially detrimental when it comes to noticing motorcycles. Take the extra time to really look before changing lanes, instead of simply glancing in the rearview.
