The Iowa Department of Transportation has released preliminary data, as of January 9, 2015, for the number of motorcycle fatalities that occurred over the course of the year 2014. Sadly, the number was an increase from both 2013 and 2011.

Motorcycle Accident Statistics: Months in 2014 with Highest Fatalities

It’s no surprise that the months with the highest number of motorcycle fatalities in 2014 in Iowa were the months when the weather was nicest, the ideal time for motorcyclists to enjoy riding. July and August had the highest number of fatalities, with 11 deaths in July, and 10 in August. June was close to follow, with nine motorcyclist deaths. There were no motorcycle fatalities in January, February, or December. The total number of motorcyclist fatalities in 2014 was 51.

Deaths Amongst Helmeted vs. Non-Helmeted Riders

Helmets have long been regarded an essential safety tool when riding a motorcycle, and yet many riders still choose to hop on a bike without one. In 2014, the death rate amongst non-helmeted riders was higher than it was amongst helmeted riders. Twelve riders who were wearing helmets at the time of the crash sustained fatal injuries, compared to 39 non-helmeted riders. It is probable that the use of the helmets could have reduced the number of motorcycle fatalities in the state in 2014.

The Number of Motorcycle Fatalities Increased from 2013 and 2011

There were 51 motorcycle fatalities in Iowa in 2014, an increase of 10 deaths from 2013, when 41 motorcyclists were killed. The number is also an increase from 2011, when 33 motorcyclists lost their lives on Iowa roads. However, the number was a slight decrease from 2012, a tragic year for motorcyclists: 57 riders experienced fatal injuries.

Families of Deceased Motorcyclists Have Right to Legal Action

Reducing the future number of motorcycle accident fatalities in the state of Iowa is the ultimate goal. For some, though, it’s too late, they’ve already lost their lives, or have experienced the loss of life of a loved one. Legal recourse is available for injured motorcyclists in Des Moines or the family members of a deceased motorcyclist who was killed by the negligence of another driver.
