Every week we receive calls from clients, asking whether they should sign the medical release form sent to them by the insurance company. When you bring a work injury claim you lose much of your medical privacy. Under Iowa law, your employer and their insurance company have a right to your medical records both before and after your work injury. Sometimes, they will even obtain your medical records without you signing a release form. Regardless, make sure you read what you are signing and only sign a medical release form. Be careful that you are not signing a settlement document or other type of release form. When you think you are just signing a medical release. Failing to sign a medical release form may result in the insurance company denying your claim and or stopping your weekly benefits.
