The eastern goldfinch is also known as the American goldfinch and the wild canary. It became Iowa’s state bird in 1933 because it is commonly found in Iowa and often stays throughout the winter.

Iowa designated the oak tree as its state tree in 1961. Some specifically consider the bur oak to be the state trees as it is the only species of tree found throughout the entire state.
