There are 3 very important deadlines you need to be mindful of when filing an Iowa Workers' Comp claim. Missing these deadlines and not acting within the proper timeframe can cause an interruption of your benefits or even cause them to be denied completely.

The first deadline comes 90 days after your workplace injury occurs or your work-related condition is discovered. Iowa law requires you to file your complaint with your employer before this 3-month period lapses. You should report the injury or condition as soon as you are aware so your employer can take the necessary steps to file for your Workers' Compensation benefits.

The other 2 deadlines come after your Iowa Workers' Comp claim is approved and you are entitled to your benefits. There are 2 cases you may run into, and each has its own requirements and deadlines for reporting to the Iowa Workers' Compensation Commissioner (IWCC).

If you have been approved for disability benefits under Workers' Compensation but have not received a check, you must file a claim with the IWCC within 2 years of the injury date. While your employer may pay medical treatment benefits, in some cases, you are also entitled to disability benefits. Missing this deadline to file could result in a denial of these benefits.

If you have been approved and have been receiving regular disability benefits, you must also file a claim with the IWCC. Your deadline will be 3 years from the date of your last disability benefit check if you only received temporary disability benefits. Missing this deadline can result in losing additional benefits for the injury.
