Iowa was considered prime frontier land starting in roughly 1833. Iowa was first organized as a territory in 1838 and then became a state in 1846. Forts throughout the state of Iowa were used in the removal of Native tribes to open land for settlement. Where were some of the first forts in Iowa, and when were they built?
1. Constructed around 1800 and active from 1808-1813, located in southeast Iowa.

2. Constructed between 1840 and 1842 and occupied until 1849 in northeast Iowa.

3. Built around 1848 to 1849, it was used from 1850 to 1853 to protect settlers and was originally called Fort Clarke.
